A construction worker has been seriously injured on a project in Canberra while loading and unloading glass panels from an A-Frame mounted on a flatbed trailer.
The incident is currently under investigation to determine the cause and contributing factors. This alert is issued to remind all workers of the critical dangers associated with incorrect handling of sheet materials, particularly during loading and unloading operations
Key Safety Reminders
Plan ahead
- Ensure there is adequate space and a designated location for deliveries before materials arrive onsite.
Safe stacking and bracing
- Stack materials securely and ensure they are appropriately braced to prevent movement or collapse.
Secure before unpacking
- Do not begin unpacking sheet materials until they are properly restrained and stabilised.
Correct vehicle setup
- Only park delivery vehicles on a flat, even surface in a designated area with enough room to work safely.
Use proper racking systems
- Always use approved racking or storage systems that prevent sheet material from tipping or falling.
Never stand in the fall path
- Workers should never be in the fall zone of vertically stored sheet materials.
Remember
Loading and unloading sheet material using incorrect procedures can result in serious injury or death. Always follow your Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) and stop work if it’s unsafe.
